A Home for Your AI Memory

LocalThink Format makes your AI conversations portable files you own. But files also need a home: a trusted place where they live, stay backed up, and remain yours forever.

A Home for Your AI Memory

AI conversations are becoming part of how people think.

LocalThink Format gives those conversations a body: a plain Markdown file, readable, portable, owned by the person who created it.

A file you own is freedom.

But a file alone is not a home.

A file can travel. Memory needs a place to live.

You can keep an .ltf.md file on your own computer, and that is completely fine. That choice is yours, and it will always be yours.

Still, even the most careful person will want a backup. A computer can break. A drive can fail. Years of thinking should not depend on a single machine.

And thinking does not stay in one place anymore. You capture a conversation on your desktop in the morning, and you want to continue it from your phone in the evening. A file sitting on one hard drive cannot follow you.

That is why files need a home: one trusted place where they live, stay backed up, and can be reached from any device.

The home is in the cloud. It is still yours.

LocalThink.org was created as the home of LocalThink Format. In practice, that home lives in the cloud: the single source of truth your iOS app and your desktop app both talk to.

This does not contradict anything LocalThink stands for. The question was never where the file sits. The question was always whether the file can leave.

An .ltf.md file stored in your home can be taken away at any time, opened in any editor, moved to any app. The sovereignty was never about the server. It was about the exit.

A home you can leave at any moment, with everything intact, is not a prison. It is a home precisely because the door is always open.

Trust is the actual product

None of this works without trust.

You trust the home not to lose your files. You trust it to stay open. You trust the keeper not to change the rules one day and close the door.

That trust is earned the slow way. LocalThink Format is released under CC0, so no one can take the format away from anyone. LocalThink.org exists as a home for the standard, separate from any single product. The LocalThink app is only one of the first applications built on it, and we welcome others, even ones that do it better.

The cloud home is voluntary. Keep everything on your own machine if you prefer. The choice itself is the proof.

What stays free, what stays yours

Your local library stays unlimited and free, forever. The format stays open, forever.

The home in the cloud is a service: backup, sync, search, share. If we ever charge for more of it, we will charge for convenience, never for ransom. Your own thinking will never be held hostage.

Personal thinking should remain personal, even in an age of intelligent machines.

A home is where it can rest. And from where it can always leave.

That is why the home exists.
