Your Thoughts Should Outlive the App

Apps shut down. Formats change. Companies get acquired and pivot. The conversations where you did your real thinking deserve a form that outlives all of that: plain, open files that any tool can read, fifty years from now.

Your Thoughts Should Outlive the App

Part 5 of 5 in a week of essays on owning your AI memory.

You have watched apps you loved disappear.

They shut down. They get acquired. They change their terms, redesign everything, or quietly become something you no longer recognize. Each time, a little of your history goes with them.

Your AI conversations are no different — except that they hold more of you than any app before them.

Rented memory

Right now, the record of your thinking lives on someone else's servers, in a format you cannot open, under terms that can change.

That is not ownership. That is a lease.

And leases end.

Formats are promises

Every proprietary format is a promise: that the company stays alive, stays kind, and keeps the lights on.

Plain text makes no such promise. It asks for nothing.

A markdown file can be opened by any editor, on any machine, fifty years from now. It needs no account. It phones nothing home. It does not expire.

The fifty-year test

Here is a question worth asking of anything that holds your thinking:

Could someone open this in fifty years?

If the answer depends on a company surviving, a server staying up, or an app still being maintained — the answer is no.

Your thoughts are the longest project of your life. They deserve a form as durable as they are.

Files you can read

This is why the LocalThink Format is plain markdown in open files.

No database you cannot inspect. No export button that might vanish in the next redesign. Just your conversations, as files, on your own machine — readable by anything, for as long as files can be read.

Your thinking belongs to you. It should be kept in a form that never needs anyone's permission to open.

That is what it means to protect personal thinking.
